Away at last Fort William 14 May 2021

I had expected to be walking the West Highland Way this week but government regulations have now caused the trip to be postponed twice; we hope for the best in May 2022. After May the midges (midgies in Scots) are too unbearable. Our final two nights (me, Sean, Karna, Tom and Sam) were booked for an Airbnb stay in the ‘log’ cabin that Cath and I are occupied last; it lies right against the western slope of Ben Nevis at the topmost elevation of Fort William. Despite businesses’ being largely allowed to reopen from 26 April, some of our accommodation between Milngavie and here wasn’t available and in the remoter parts there is so little choice that we had to cancel the trip. Unfortunately Airbnb, or our host’s policy was to levy the standard 50% cancellation charge, so we thought that we might as well come anyway and move on to Aberdeen for a further two nights.

So here we are and it was a great road journey here, 12/13C and very little wind. Some sunshine and perfectly dry until we tried to sit down at the Black Isle Bar to have our long anticipated beer. We moved indoors for pizza but no alcohol; Nicola doesn’t approve of that. We enjoyed it very much and it seems likely that they douse the thin crust with a fairly coarse polenta for extra crunch: works for me and I like to use it instead of breadcrumbs.
